Contemporary Botanical Drawings
These charcoal drawings started when I became completely enthralled by a wild carrot globe, having never previously paid much attention to the structure of flowers and plants before.
I purposefully choose charcoal as my favoured medium as it allows an uninterrupted response to the subject, an immediacy like a stream of conscience. The corrections of my visual decisions can be seen as ghosts beneath and around the emerging image, so the drawing holds the history of the journey of the art work.
My motivation for increasing the scale of the botanical images is to amplify the abstract qualities of tone and pattern.
